A Brief History of Waverly
F. Shumacher & Co. launched the Waverly brand in 1923 as an
alternative to their exclusive European fabrics. The first collection consisted
of eight reasonably priced domestic chintzes purchased from American designer Cy
Clark, in a means to target America’s rapidly growing middle class. After some
success the company expanded three years later and established the Waverly Piece
Goods division while registering the name as Waverly Bonded Fabrics. Waverly was
also very good at promoting itself and in the roaring 20’s it was easy to find
their advertising in House & Garden, Town & Country, House Beautiful and Vogue…
a tradition that continues to this day. Wallpaper lines were created in 1939 and
by 1951 had introduced their Waverly Home Fashions division with ready made
bedding ensembles. This created the much sought after “Waverly look” as it was
known. Nowadays this popularity has pushed even more lines of products offered
including bed linens, lamps, paints, and rugs.
