A Brief History of John Deere & Company...

John Deere was born in Vermont and the son of a tailor. He apprenticed at a young age as a blacksmith. After marrying and having 5 children he departed for Grand Detour, Illinois. There he discovered that the Midwest soil was tough and that not many plows were able to penetrate the hard clay grounds for farming. According to legend Deere recalled how a sharpened needle thread better in his fathers old shop and used that as the inspiration of the design of a plow made of highly polished steel with a correctly shaped moldboard. This designed plow was revolutionary and took off upon its release in release in 1837. by 1855 Deere’s company had shipped out over 10,000 of such plows! After retirement Deere focused more on political affairs. He served as Moline, Illinois 2^nd mayor for two years, President of the National Bank of Moline, director of the Moline Free Public Library, and was a trustee on the board of the First Congressional Church.
