The Early Years

Calvin Klein was a protégé of famous New York designer Baron de Gunzburg where he became a very popular figure in Gotham’s elite fashion scene, long before he ever had any denim of his own on the market.  Once the original store was up and running in the York Hotel in New York, the success of his master of minimalism in his jeans design and claimed that 200,000 pairs of his jeans were sold in the first week of 1978! His jean line hit an all time popularity high when in 1979/1980 he hired a 15 year old Brook Shields to appear in a commercial saying; “nothing comes between me and my Calvins” and “I’ve got seven Calvins in my closet, and if they could talk, I’d be ruined.” Shields again appeared in his commercials in 1984 as well as another ultra successful campaign featuring Mark Walberg in the 1990’s.
